Rustic Reimagined

UK

Buckinghamshire

The brief for this project was to preserve and celebrate the unique character of the barn conversion, showcasing the exposed beamwork throughout and allowing the double-height central living space, complete with its inglenook fireplace, to take centre stage. At the same time, the aim was to introduce a warm, inviting aesthetic that felt soft, sophisticated, and timeless, allowing the period features to shine without feeling dated.

A cohesive, earthy colour palette creates a sense of calm and continuity throughout the home. In the main living space, subtle green accents and carefully placed houseplants bring elements of the outdoors in, while maximising the abundance of natural light enhances the openness of the interior, balanced with a fresh yet lived-in feel.

Furniture and styling strike a balance between old and new, pairing simple, modern wooden forms with carefully selected antique finds. Traditional gilt-framed artwork is layered alongside more contemporary pieces, creating a considered and characterful mix. Within the expansive open-plan living area, the layout is thoughtfully arranged to form distinct yet connected zones: a comfortable lounge centred around the fire, a welcoming dining space, and a relaxed seating area positioned to enjoy the garden outlook.

Upstairs, a softer palette with fresher tones creates a calm, restful environment. A more pared-back, modern approach ensures the spaces feel light and current, while maintaining cohesion with the character of the home.

The overall scheme is designed to work effortlessly year-round, cosy and enveloping in the winter months, yet light and uplifting through spring and summer. Black accents echo the barn’s original ironmongery, adding contrast and a refined finish, while linen and barkweave textures introduce softness that complements the rural setting.
